There are two main sources of thymol: one is extracted from natural products (thyme oil, oregano oil, basil oil), and the other is obtained artificially. Due to the limited natural resources and the high extraction cost and environmental pressure, thymol is mainly artificially synthesized at present. Thymol has the characteristics of phenolic drugs. It has a strong antibacterial and antiseptic effect on fungi and actinomycetes, but a weaker effect on Gram-negative bacteria. It is 1/10 of phenol; it has a strong sensory paralysis effect. Oral thymol can be completely absorbed by the intestinal tract, and about 50% of the metabolites combined with glucuronic acid and sulfuric acid in the form of thymoquinone are excreted in the urine.
1. Thymol has a stronger bactericidal effect than phenol, and has low toxicity. It has bactericidal and fungicidal effects on oral and throat mucous membranes, and has antiseptic and local anesthetic effects on carious cavities. It is used for disinfection and sterilization of oral cavity and throat, dermatophytosis, Actinomycosis and otitis. It can promote the movement of tracheal cilia, which is beneficial to the secretion of tracheal mucus. It is easy to eliminate phlegm and has a bactericidal effect, so it can be used to treat bronchitis and whooping cough.
2. Thymol has the characteristics of phenolic drugs. It has a strong antibacterial and antiseptic effect on fungi and actinomycetes, but a weaker effect on Gram-negative bacteria. It has stronger bactericidal power than phenol, and is less irritating to skin and mucous membranes than phenol.
