Fullerene C60 was proposed in 1985 by Krott (H.W.) and Smalley.R.E. (Smalley.R.E.) and others from Rice University in Houston. They used high-power laser beam to vaporize graphite, and helium gas at 1MPa pressure was used to generate ultrasonic waves, which made the carbon atoms vaporized by laser beam go through a small nozzle into vacuum and expand And cooled rapidly to obtain C60. The composition and structure of C60 have been proved by mass spectrometry X-ray analysis and other experiments. In addition, many molecules similar to C60, such as C70, have been discovered successively.
