What is Carbomer Powder?
Carbomer is a high molecular polymer cross-linked by acrylic acid and allyl sucrose or allyl pentaerythritol. It was first produced by G00drich Company of the United States, and its trade name is Carbopol. This product is loose white powder, acidic, hygroscopic and special slightly smelly, soluble in water, ethanol, glycerin. The molecule contains 56% to 58% carboxyl groups, so it is weakly acidic. When carbomer is dispersed in water, due to the repulsion between the negative charges generated by the ionization of the carboxyl group, the curly polymer stretches and expands in volume. The pH of the 0.5% aqueous dispersion is 2.7-3.5. The 1% aqueous dispersion can be neutralized by alkaline substances to form a gel. Commonly used aqueous dispersions have a concentration of 0.1% to 3.0%.
