Alpha-mangostin is isolated from the Mangosteen, it exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial and antitumour activities. It has a role as an antineoplastic agent, an antimicrobial agent, an antioxidant and a plant metabolite. It is a member of xanthones, a member of phenols and an aromatic ether.
Mangosteen is also known as Garcinia mangostana L., is cultivated in Southeast Asia, included in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia.
As its high levels of antioxidants, also known as xanthones, it is uniquely different than other tropical fruits. This fruit is juicy with graceful taste, the rind, twig and bark are all used for medicinal purposes.
The mangosteen rind contains the bioactive compounds alpha-mangostin, beta-mangostin, garcinone B and garcinone E, they're all called xanthones. In fact, the people in Southeast Asia have been using the rind of mangosteen for centuries to treat numbers of conditions including diarrhea, urinary tract infections (UTIs), cancer and intestinal infections. As "biologically active" plant-derived compounds, xanthones protect the body from various illnesses and may help prevent disease.
In Thailand, it is also used as medical plant for the treatment of skin infections and wounds.
