Fluvoxamine is an antidepressant which functions as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Fluvoxamine was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993 for the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Fluvoxamine CR (controlled release) is approved to treat social anxiety disorder. Fluvoxamine is also prescribed to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Fluvoxamine maleate is a selective SR (serotonin reputake) inhibitor. Fluvoxamine is described to bind the human 5-HT transporter protein with high affinity (Ki = 1.6 nM) while demonstrating very low affinity at the norepinephrine transporter (Ki = 2,950 nM). Fluvoxamine maleate is a xigema Receptor agonist.
Fluvoxamine maleate is an antidepressant medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Here are the key functions and applications of fluvoxamine maleate:
Treatment of Depression: Fluvoxamine maleate is primarily used for the treatment of depression, including major depressive disorder (MDD). It helps to balance the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, which can improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Fluvoxamine maleate is also approved for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It can reduce obsessions (persistent and intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors) associated with this disorder.
Anxiety Disorders: Fluvoxamine maleate can be prescribed for various anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and panic disorder. It can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, such as excessive worry, nervousness, or panic attacks.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Fluvoxamine maleate may be used as a treatment option for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder. It can help alleviate symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, nightmares, and hyperarousal.
Other Conditions: In some cases, fluvoxamine maleate may be prescribed for other conditions such as eating disorders (e.g., binge eating disorder), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), or certain sleep disorders.
